All About Delilah

delilah 240 All About Delilah

Delilah, the most-listened-to-woman on radio in the U.S., embraced the medium when she was a middle-schooler in Reedsport, Oregon, reporting school news and sports on KDUN-AM, a small station in her hometown. Today, her soothing voice, open heart and love of music has expanded her audience from the folks in Reedsport to more than eight million people on over 200 radio stations in the U.S. and Canada.

Her distinctive blend of story-telling, sympathetic listening and encouragement – all scored with adult contemporary soft rock – makes her top ranked in most markets among women 25-54. Delilah says her show is a “safety zone where listeners take off their armor, slip into a ‘Mr. Rogers’ cardigan, sit around the electronic hearth and share their secrets.”

She adds that her audience is “just like me and the two women working on the show, who were once listeners. We are single parents who work hard to strike a balance between family and work life. We also enjoy our friendships and remember to laugh as much as possible.”

Delilah is also an author whose latest book, “Love Matters,” was released in October of 2008. Published by Harlequin Books, Delilah shares her perspective on love and includes stories from her radio listeners.

As a single mother of 10 children, seven of whom she adopted, Delilah has established a foundation called Point Hope as a voice for forgotten children everywhere. The immediate focus of the Foundation is on refugee children in Ghana and on special needs children in the foster care system nationwide and in her neighborhood of White Center in Seattle.

In addition to a passion for children and radio, Delilah is devoted to music because “it touches the heart the way nothing else can.” Her father had a Country-Western band, and her brother played in a Jazz band. Though she writes lyrics, she cannot sing. Delilah says, “I always wanted to be a performer, but I can’t sing, dance or act. Luckily, I found I could talk!”

Delilah, loves her work “because it has allowed me to bring together a distinct community of people who reach out to help one another. We don’t try to fix people. We listen. We sympathize. We empathize. If the show has a message, it’s listen to your own gut. Trust your own intuition. Go where it leads. Don’t give up.”

Daily broadcasts, caring for her children, running a foundation, writing books, traveling and public speaking add up to a very busy life for Delilah. And she wouldn’t have it any other way.

I listen to your show every night while working from a home office. Ten children? You go, girl!! The foster care system is very much a part of my life – 3 grand-nieces/nephew are currently in foster care – my most fervent prayer is that they become eligible for adoption by the wonderful family they are with currently. God bless you for your love of children.

My 7 year old daughter listens to you every night. She found out that I could contact you via email and has wanted to say something to you. Here goes . . .
“I am really excited when I get to hear “Delilah’s Delimma.” I would love to talk to you. I would like to write “Deiliah’s Delimma” one day. Could you please play “Time of Your Life” for me?”

Sophie goes to bed at 8:00 pm and listens to you as she falls asleep. When her twin brother heard we were writing you, he requested that play, “Hey Soul Sister.”

44years ago I was a young 18 year old girl in the United States Marine Corps and I was dating a young Marine(from New York)…while we were both stationed in San Diego. He got orders to Viet Nam and I received orders for Norfolk Navy Base. When I arrived at Norfolk I found out I was expecting a child. I separated from the Corps and came home to Illinois to have our child. My son at 6 weeks of age came down with a rare form of menigitis and was at the millitary hospital as a civilian emergency. I needed to reach his father and was bounced all over the place and was finally told he had been killed in action. I went on with my life and raised my child, met my wonderfully Christian husband and we were married for 34 years before he passed away of lung cancer. My son decided to do some research on his biological father’s unit and what areas of VietNam that he might have been stationed. Delilah, my son found his father alive and well and living only 20 miles from my home and had been there 16 years! Amazing!! When we met for the first time in 44 years one of the first questions was why didn’t he come looking for us and he said when he came back from Nam he was told that I had married someone else in the unit, so he put in to do a second tour in Nam! Why God waited so long for us to cross paths has just blown us away. We can only assume that we werent met to be together when we were young kids. 44 years later we are back together and seeing each other … we are both single and are just being good friends…so far. God really works in mysterious ways doesn’t he? Could you please dedicate a song for us similar to Frank Sinatra “Second Time Around”?

  8. candice pierce says:

    hi delilah
my name is candice pierce im 22 ,and three years ago my mom got pregnant for the fourth time. and had my litttle brother john jr, ever since he was born hes had some problems. after birth he developed jaundice and had to put on what i call a belly light for two weeks.
when he was three months we found out that he had a growing sist. dr woo told us his case was very rare cause he didnt have just one, he had like a dozen or so more. he had two surgerys to drain it that went very well ,but when they did it for the third time it didnt work at all .about a week ago john jr had surgery for the fourth time but this time they removed it completly.
we just found out that hes going to have to go for the biggest surgery of his three year old life. the doc told us that for a kid john jrs age they normaly have six openings in there skulls in order to allow there brains room to grow, and that they dont close until your completly grown. but john jrs is already closed and hes only three years old.
if they dont operate and correct it he has a very good chance of his skull growing long ways and crushing his brain causing him to maybe develope retardation. and if they do operate he has a very slim chance of bleeding out and dieing on the operating table. mom and dad have decided to have the surgery done and that means that john jr will be in for surgery for eight to twelve hours next month.
delilah could you please play a song and pray for my little brother and our family.

I’ve so enjoy listening to you on the air, especially as I’m driving home from class. I must admit though that I’m disappointed that Christmas music is already being broadcast on your show. I suppose I’m just very traditional this way. I prefer to hear and see anything associated with Christmas until after Thanksgiving. I’ll be back after having the opportunity to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner but will keep you and those touched by your voice in my prayers until then.

  10. Shaeleigh says:

    Dear Delilah,
I know you hear this all the time, but you have the most soothing voice. Thank you.

When my grandchildren were small we use to listen to you all the time and there was one song that we all loved. Sliegh Bells by Patti Page. Do you thiink you could play it for Alexis, Deja, and Naomi in Tampa Florida and my other granddaughter Janee, in the Bronx NY.

If you don’t mind I would like to tell you about somethting wonderful that happen to me a few years ago. I had been very ill and it was time to get go and pickup a christmas tree. I went to home depot but all the trees they had were too big for me pick up, as I was leaving I ran into my next door neighibor Howard and we talked for a minute or so. Later that evening I awoke to someone knocking at my door. When I opened the door Howard, my next door neighbor was standing there with a Christmas tree for me. I burst into tears. Little did I know that I had a guardian angel living right next door to me.
Delilah would you play a song for Howard, on st nathan lane in st ann mo, my guardian angel. I feel so blessed by what he did for me. God bless you Howard for your kindness.

LOL Delilah this is the third third time I am going to try to send this. For some reason it did not take the other two times.

  17. Rose says:

My three nieces and nephew lost there dad two years ago yesterday to a massive heart attack. Then last May they lost there mom. It saddens me that I lost not only my brother but my sister-in-law. We always had said that if something ever happened to my brother and his wife that we would look after the kids. Their ages are from 22 up to 30. I know that they are not kids anymore, but I just wanted to let them know that they are a part of our lives and we are always here for them no matter what. They are very special to us. We love them like they are our own and I hope they never forget that. It’s not easy loosing a love one and loosing both parents within a year and 2 months.
