For the first time, American Idol took their new pack of positive judges to the home state of soon-to-be Superbowl contenders–the Packers. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Steven Tyler’s [/lastfm]and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Jennifer Lopez[/lastfm]’ soft-touch has rubbed off on Randy Jackson; R-Dogg has given up his previous nasty-mouthed snark that Simon seemed to inspire.

It helps that the show’s producers focused on inspirational stories this week and not the normal fodder of talentless hacks specifically there for ratings.

Milwaukee boasted a lot of above average to excellent singers, although 22-year-old Civil War re-enacter, Nathaniel Jones, was not one of those. Although, he definitely had one of our favorite lines in American Idol history (not that we’ve watched every season):

They ask me, ‘Is your dad a hippie? Does he smoke pot?’ No. He’s not a hippie. Hippie’s believe in sex…He’s not a hippie. He hasn’t gone anywhere, with anyone, since my mom left.

After our eyes get really wide and we hope the young gentleman is getting therapy, he sings “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”  Very high. Ok, so it wasn’t bad. But we aren’t sure America can handle the world’s first Civil War re-enacter pop star. We think.

Our two favorites of the night were Harvard-grad and White House intern, Molly DeWolf Swensen, and “Boyfriend of the Millenium,” Chris Medina.

Dewolf Swenson kept composed even after getting  a smack in the face from Randy Jackson. Watching the replay, it looks like it hurt. Too bad the Secret Service weren’t there to protect her.

She sang [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Otis Redding[/lastfm]’s “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” starting off with a gorgeous low-tone that would be hard for even the most talented jazz singers to pull themselves out of.

Chicago-native Chris Medina brought us to tears with his moving story and his rich, clear voice singing [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Script[/lastfm]’s “Break Even.”
