bin laden post Osama Bin Laden Dead

At 11:35pm (EDT) last night President Barak Obama addressed the nation, via a live feed from the East Wing of the White House, and announced that the founder and spiritual figurehead for al Qaeda, Osama bin Laden, is dead.

Last night CNN reported that Bin Laden was killed “hiding in plain sight” inside of a mansion outside of Islamabad, Pakistan. Early speculation pointed toward a U.S. drone attack, it is now being revealed that this historic operation was executed by a human effort.

In an address to the United States from the East Wing of the White House, President Obama elaborated; he’d received credible intelligence of Bin Laden’s location last week at which point he authorized the mission’s go-ahead. Early this morning, U.S. troops entered the Islamabad mansion and after a fire-fight, during which Bin Laden was killed, the troops took possession of Bin Laden’s body. The President also confirmed that no U.S. operatives were injured during the skirmish.

What this means for the U.S.’s already strained relations with Pakistan is unclear, however Obama reiterated during his address that from the moment he took Office he’d promised the American people that no matter where Bin Laden was found, he would take the necessary action.

The long-lost terrorist mastermind had eluded an aggressive hunt by U.S. authorities for nearly ten years since the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 11, 2001.

Former State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said on Twitter: “#BinLaden’s death does not eliminate the threat from #alQaeda, but it is hard to see anyone playing the same organizational role he did.”
