Is it wrong to feel like you need a vacation after you’ve just returned from vacation?

Not if you’re like me, the parent of young children (7, 4 & 2)

This parenting thing is hard work, and the work doesn’t stop just because you’ve hit the road in a minivan.  As a matter of fact, I contend that it’s harder to keep the kids happy and involved while you’re on vacation–especially the kind of vacation we just returned from, a quiet week away on the sunny beaches of Union Pier, Michigan.

BTW–I can’t recommend Union Pier and the surrounding areas (New Buffalo, Saugatuck, etc) highly enough.  To us, it’s the best of both worlds–beautiful, sandy beaches located within  a six hour drive of St. Louis, which my wife and I have determined is the absolute limit we can endure before the inevitable “whine-fest” begins.

“Are we there yet?

“I need a snack!”

“I wanna go home!”

As for Union Pier, we’ve always figured that having a beach within walking distance is a great way to spend the day…and it is. The problem is that it’s exhausting chasing these kids around all day. I’m afraid the days of enjoying a book and a little solitude  under a beach umbrella are long over for me.

I wouldn’t have it any other way though. These times away are about them, and the memories they’re forming.

Plus, is there really ever a better way to spend an early summer evening with kids than an Old Maid tournament?

So we enjoyed a week off–not a vacation so much as it was a “change of scenery” as my wife put it.

At least I was able to make my yearly sojourn to Crane’s Pie Pantry in Fenville Michigan which, trust me on this, is worth all the whining and complaining you may have to endure.
