A bet is a bet.

And I knew the risks when I made this one with our traffic reporter and Kirkwood High grad Sue Thomas.

The Webster-Kirkwood Turkey Day football game is one of those great local traditions that everyone in both communities can embrace.  Even though I never attended Webster Groves High,  I am a resident and have young children in the school district.

So they’re my team!

The annual game has been happening for nearly 100 years with Webster leading the all-time series–a fact that I made very clear on the air leading up to this year’s game. I felt good about our chances due to the fact that the Statesmen (of Webster) had defeated the Pioneers a few weeks ago giving them a spot in the playoffs.

And although Webster had just suffered a crushing defeat at home to Parkway Central which knocked them out of state championship contention, that made this game even more interesting because it meant for the first time since 2008, both varsity squads would be participating.

What a great tribute to both programs that over the past 5 years, one or the other has been a playoff participant.  This meant that the past 5  Turkey Day games have been played by both school’s JV squads.

Not this year though.  It would be Varsity vs. Varsity for the rights to the Frisco Bell awarded to the winning school.

So imagine my surprise on Thursday when reports  from the game indicated Kirkwood was scoring early and often.

It turned out to be a route with the Pioneers shutting out my “hometown team” 44-0.  You can read more about it and see the “highlights”  here.

Again, a bet is a bet, so I must say:

Congratulations to Susan Thomas, a graduate of the greatest high school in the history of the world, Kirkwood High School in Kirkwood Missouri.

OK?……We’re good now?

(Just wondering…was the pin was absolutely necessary?)
