With Spring finally here, you can expect severe storms and possible threats of tornadoes. While our safety is important, so our are pets. Do you have a plan for you and your family? Here are some tips and a check list to help you prepare when severe weather strikes from the Animal Medical Center of Mid-America.

Before a tornado, identify a “safe area” in your home for your family & pets to go when you first hear the tornado sirens sound. They best places to seek shelter are either in your basement or an interior-most room in your home. Try avoiding windows if possible. Make sure you have a disaster kit with medicine, pet identification, water, food your pet’s leash & a blanket. — You could even keep these supplies near your designated safe area, so it’s quick to grab.

If you have a crate, it can help keep your pet safe from debris. Grab your pet first and then put your furry loved one into the crate. If your pet is not fond of crates, try keeping them on a leash or try your best to hold on to them.

It’s not uncommon for pets to seek a hiding place when severe weather happens. Try your best to cut off your pets favorite hiding place before the weather gets bad. This will save you time if you need to seek shelter as soon as possible.

During a tornado or if the sirens go off, try and remain calm, and quickly move your pet into the safe area. Do your best to keep the crate or your pet away from windows. If you need to evacuate, do your best to keep you pet close & your disaster kit close, too.

Wait until the tornado warning has expired before leaving your safe area. Do you best to keep your pet calm and do not uncrate them until you have had a chance to examine the environment. If there is a lot of storm damage, keep them out of harms way.
