Worst Film Ever Made Made Begins With Steve Guttenberg On Roller Skates

Greg Hewitt

I know, I buried the lead.

Actor/dancer/roller skating giant, Steve Guttenberg celebrates his 56th birthday on Sunday.

Best known for roles in the “Police Academy” series of films and “Three Men And A Baby”,Guttenberg  actually had a pretty good run of semi-stardom throughout most of the 80’s.

Then again, that may say more about the 80‘s than it does about Guttenberg.

His career success is surprising for a few reasons, not the least of which is his role in what many refer to as the single worst movie ever made.

The fact that is didn’t instantly kill his career, is the highest tribute one could pay him I think.

“Can’t Stop The Music” was released in the early 80’s and most everything you need to know about it, you see in the first few minutes of the film.

That, and the fact that it was billed as “Starring The Village People!

Watching this clip, there’s no doubt it’s historically bad.  I mean, it’s the film that “Introduced” us to the acting genius of Bruce Jenner!

The reviews were scathing in a “Spinal Tap” sort of way. According to Wikipedia:

It currently holds an 8% “rotten” score on Rotten Tomatoes.  The New York Time called  it “thoroughly homogenized.”  Yahoo called the film “an absolute train-wreck of a movie”.

Baskin Robbins Ice Cream sold a flavor called “Can’t Stop the Nuts” as part of the promotion of the film.

Yet, there’s something really, really funny about watching Guttenberg roller boogie throughout New York City.

Just not for the reasons they intended.

The real fun starts around 1:25 when Guttenberg emerges from behind the counter with his roller skates on.

No, I’m not kidding.  Trust me, just watch it.
