‘Be The Match’ on Sept. 6 and Help Save a Life

Greg Hewitt

I had the opportunity last week to interview a very impressive young guy named Chaz Littlejohn.

It turned out to be one of those interviews I’ll never forget.

Chaz was scheduled to appear on our weekly “Metro Show”, which airs Sunday mornings on Fresh 102.5, to help promote the upcoming “Be The Match” Walk+Run on Sept. 6 at Creve Coeur Lake.

Our stations within the CBS Radio group in St. Louis are proud to be sponsors of this event.

Be The Match operates the Be The Match Registry, the world’s largest listing of potential marrow donors and donated cord blood units.

Every year, thousands of people of all ages are diagnosed with blood cancers like leukemia or lymphoma, sickle cell anemia or other life-threatening diseases. Seventy percent of people do not have a donor in their family and depend on the Be The Match Registry to find a match to save their life.

This is something Chaz knows something about.

He became involved with Be The Match when his younger sister Meredith, a high school senior at the time, was diagnosed with Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in late 2012. After months of treatment and several rounds of chemotherapy, she went into remission. Unfortunately, her leukemia returned and she passed away late last year.

When I asked Chaz to describe his sister, his face lit up.

“She made you love her because she gave so much of herself.”

Not only has Chaz become involved in promoting the Be The Match Registry, but as a tribute to Meredith, he took the next step and became a bone marrow donor.  It was this step which led to a donor match and a life saving transplant for a another patient.

You can help him and many others by participating in the Be The Match Walk+Run on Sept. 6.  There’s still time to get involved.
