Universal announced yesterday that its long-awaited film adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked will hit theaters on December 20, 2019. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will be directed by Stephen Daldry and produced by Marc Platt–who are also producers of the long-running stage show. Writer Winnie Holzman and composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz, who collaborated on the musical, will also return for the movie. Wicked, which premiered on Broadway in 2003 and offers an alternate telling of The Wizard of Oz, is a three-time Tony Award winner. The production also crossed the $1 billion mark on Broadway in March, with global ticket sales of around $4 billion.
