Star of the hit NBC family drama "This Is Us" Chrissy Metz plays the starring role in the new feature film "Breakthrough," which is based on the real story of a St. Louis miracle.

"Breakthrough" is an upcoming feature film based on Joyce Smith’s account and her 2017 memoir "The Impossible," which retells the true, harrowing tale of her miracle survivor son, John, who fell through the ice of a local lake and was given a bleak prognosis for survival.

The St. Charles County teen made headlines in early 2015 when he survived unscathed after falling through the ice of Lake Ste. Louise. John was under water for more than 15 minutes, and his complete recovery has come to be known as the "miracle on ice."

Metz admitted to feeling intimidated by the role, but grateful that she had the opportunity to help bring Smith’s story to the big screen, People reports.

“She was pleasantly surprised and even shocked in some of the ways I portrayed her which was the nicest, most wonderful compliment I think I could ever get," Metz said of Smith.

The movie also stars Topher Grace (That '70s Show) and Mike Colter (Luke Cage).
