ST. LOUIS (KEZK) — Officers with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department who worked during the Stanley Cup Playoffs will soon don a limited-edition, first-of-its-kind honorary Stanley Cup Champions badge.

Officers are authorized to wear the badge beginning Wednesday, Oct. 2, the day of the St. Louis Blues' home opener, and throughout the duration of the 2019-2020 NHL season.

"This badge details, illustrates and highlights a 50-year relationship between the police department and the St. Louis Blues," said Sgt. Matt Karnowski. "I'm so excited and proud help bring this badge to our officers during this time in Blues' history."

The department's K-9 unit will also represent the hometown champs with 13 special-edition badges featuring the dog's name on each instead of a badge number.

"This badge is something that will be a huge morale booster for our office and something over 90% of officers wanted to be a part of," Public Information Officer Michelle Woodling said in a statement. "It's something that they can keep forever."
