Dishwashers are a great invention -- you load them up, press a button, and out your dishes come, squeaky clean.

But not every dish or cooking utensil has a place in the dishwasher.

Realtor.com recently shared a list of items you should and shouldn't wash in a dishwasher:

NO:

  • Cast-iron skillets - The pan will lose its seasoning, and can rust.
  • Cheese graters - Dishwasher can't remove hidden cheese in grater holes.
  • Nonstick pots and pans - Over time, the dishwashing process can break down the nonstick coating.
  • Sharp knives - Knives rub up against other cutlery in the dishwasher, which can cause them to dull.
  • Wooden cooking items - Wood can crack in a dishwasher.

YES:

  • Sponges
  • Plastic toys
  • Glass lightbulb covers
  • Barbecue grill grates
  • Contact lens cases
  • Shower heads
  • Hairbrushes and combs
  • Rubber flip-flops, canvas sneakers, and baseball caps
  • Mouth guards
  • Makeup brushes
