On Sunday's premiere of ABC’s reboot of American Idol, a pair of singers who performed original songs shined during auditions. Quirky singer Catie Turner started things off by performing an original track called “20th Century Machine,” about being jaded by the media. Judge Lionel Richie noted that he was “fascinated” by her brain, while Katy Perry and Luke Bryan also agreed to send her to Hollywood.

Later, 16-year-old Harper Grace aimed to redeem herself after going viral as a kid for a terrible rendition of the national anthem. For her Idol audition, she performed an original country song called “Yard Sale.” Both Lionel and Luke praised Harper for her clever lyrics, while Katy told her, “You’re a dream for Hollywood.”

The strongest vocal performance of the night came from Disney fanatic Alyssa Raghunandan, who wooed the judges with her soulful cover of Ariana Grande and Nathan Sykes’ “Almost Is Never Enough.” After her performance, Katy predicted she would end up in the top 10.
